Harry Fairchild died on March 4, 2002, following a long illness. He was a close friend of John Mays, who died on March 6, 2002.
Recorded on 35th anniversary of KBOA. Excerpts:
“I came to work for KBOA in September, 1959. How I got into radio though, it’s a different story. I was interested in radio from the time I heard my first one. I was working for a trucking company in St. Louis, Missouri but had had some previous radio training so I took a correspondence course with DeFrye, Inc. in Chicago.
I completed that and started looking for a job. I made a run down through Arkansas and Missouri just looking around to see what I could come up with. Johnny Mack was looking for a night-time man on FM and he hired me to replace Bill Fischer (who was doing a show) called Platter Party (photo at right). Bill was supposed to have been with me a week and the first night I just watched and the second night I did a little of it and the third night I did it and he watched. On the fourth night when I came into work Johnny Mack informed me that Bill was sick and I’d be on my own.
I ran Platter Party there for a good long while and finally I started doing Sundown Serenade on AM and FM in the afternoon and eventually did a show called Noon Day Serenade which I really enjoyed. One I’ll never forget is Rock House. Rock House was on every afternoon from 5 until 5:30, or maybe it’s 5:30 to 6 o’clock. Anyway, that ran right into Sundown Serenade which was easy listening big bands and so forth.”
